Penn State Fires Coach James Franklin
Penn State fired longtime head coach James Franklin on Sunday, less than 24 hours after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern.
Former Gateway coach Terry Smith, an Aliquippa native and former Gateway High School head coach and football star, will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season.
The Nittany Lions (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) began the year with hopes of winning the national title, but those hopes evaporated by early October with three consecutive losses.
The school fired the longtime head coach after a loss that all but ended whatever remote chance the preseason No. 2 team had of reaching the College Football Playoff.
