Two sides of discovery: Physicist swaps molecules for Mount Everest in study abroad

Two Sides of Discovery

Physicist Prem Chapagain, an FIU professor, led a group of students to Nepal on a study abroad program, swapping molecular forces for Himalayan heights.

Chapagain's research typically focuses on modeling atoms and electrons to understand protein folding and virus replication, which could lead to new disease treatments or vaccines. However, he took a different approach this past summer, introducing students to his native Nepal.

He blended history, culture and current issues in a way that made the material feel alive.

According to Santiago Fermin, a sophomore finance major, Chapagain's unique approach made the material engaging. The study abroad program included a class to prepare students for the trip, which was attended by 12 Honors College students.

Together, they discovered Nepal's culture, wildlife, and landscapes, providing a unique learning experience. Chapagain's initiative allowed students to explore a new country and its ways, broadening their perspectives.
