Colorado Springs City Council Rejects Proposal to Charge Solar Customers More
Colorado Springs City Council informally voted 5-4 to kill a proposal that would increase monthly bills for solar customers.
The proposal aimed to level the field by charging solar users more for peak hour usage, as part of the new Energy Wise program.
- The Energy Wise program, rolled out in October, charges normal grid electric users more for power used during peak hours of 5-9 p.m.
- Solar users were not included in this change, as they generate most of their energy during morning or early afternoon hours when demand is lower and supply is higher.
Tristen Gearheart, CFO of Colorado Springs Utilities, noted that energy during these hours is cheaper.
Many solar customers expressed concerns that the change would renege on past incentives, having spent tens of thousands of dollars installing solar panels.
Hundreds of Colorado Springs residents attended a hearing on the proposal, providing testimony and comments.
