Late Night Tornado Warning on the Central Coast
A rare tornado warning was issued on Monday night, surprising many and causing concern throughout the Central Coast.
The National Weather Service in Oxnard issued the warning at 11:21 p.m., alerting cell phone users in San Luis Obispo County and the Santa Maria Valley of severe thunderstorms capable of producing a tornado.
"It was pretty scary," said Eddie Rocha of Santa Maria. "When I saw it, that was the first time I saw one of those."
The warning advised people to seek shelter immediately in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and for those outside to move into a substantial shelter to protect themselves from potential flying debris.
