ELMONT, NY -- Matthew Schaefer, the 2025 first-overall pick, scored his first NHL goal during the New York Islanders' home opener on Saturday.
The goal came at 16:41 of the third period, with the Islanders on a power play and trailing 4-1 to the Washington Capitals. After a scramble, Schaefer scored, chopping the puck past Capitals goalie Logan Thompson to cut the deficit to 4-2.
