Six people, including three children, lost their lives in a tragic house fire early this morning on Kingfisher Street, between Gordons and Erima in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Residents reported waking up around 2 a.m. to screams and heavy smoke as the flames quickly engulfed a rental property owned by a man from Hela Province. Neighbours rushed to help, but the fire spread too fast, reducing the house to ashes within minutes.
“We found the three children with their aunty and grandmother in one room and the father in another,” said Luwai. “The windows were barred so it was difficult for them to escape.”
Fire services were alerted at 2:56 a.m., but by the time firefighters arrived, the structure was already consumed by flames. Tenants on the top floor managed to save themselves by breaking a bathroom window and jumping to safety.
