NSF Award to Monitor Changes in Alaskan River Ecosystem

The National Science Foundation awarded an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Arkansas $700,000 to monitor changes in river movement and the fish population.

The research will focus on the Qanirtuuq River in southwest Alaska, which impacts the infrastructure and economy of the village of Quinhagak.

Quinhagak is located in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, the second-largest deltaic system in the world, and is known for its excellent salmon fishing, with all five species of Pacific salmon.

The project team includes Carla Klehm, assistant professor of anthropology and assistant director of the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies.

The village resides on the mouth of the Qanirtuuq River, which flows through the delta into the Bering Sea.

Author's summary: Researchers receive $700,000 to study Alaskan river ecosystem.
