An expat living in Costa Rica returns to Los Angeles, keeping Spanish sharp through taqueria conversations and a dose of Pura Vida.
After a month of speaking zero Spanish, the author was anxious to get their language skills back on track. As they spent more time away from the language, they found themselves forgetting words and often saying "Como?" in conversation.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, the author visited their son's restaurant on Melrose, where they met Felipe, a cook at the taqueria next door. Felipe, born and raised in LA, greeted the author warmly in English and invited them for a drink.
The author joined Felipe and his friends, including two men from Mexico and a Cal-Mex woman, for a drink and shared that they lived in Costa Rica.
I lived in Costa Rica.
