A New Mexico State University astronomer and her team can now predict space weather, providing warnings of solar flares that impact daily life.
Current methods offer either short notice (a few hours to days) or long notice (about 11 years). In contrast, Juie Shetye and Mausumi Dikpati's new AI/ML method provides notice within a year.
Their paper, "Analysis of Short-term Solar Activity Variability and Estimating Timings of Next Enhanced Bursts," was published in The Astrophysical Journal on October 14.
