An optocoupler, found in almost every mains powered switch mode power supply, can be used for more than its typical application of providing safely isolated feedback between the low voltage and high voltage sides.
[b.kainka] has demonstrated this by creating an optocoupler powered LED flasher, showing that if a part can be made to act as an amplifier with a gain greater than one, it should also be possible to make it oscillate.

By wiring up the optocoupler as an inverting amplifier with appropriate feedback, it will oscillate, proving its versatility.
