The spill occurred when a 15-meter dike at the Universal Robina Corporation's distillery plant collapsed, leaking wastewater into the sea along Tañon Strait, between Negros and Cebu islands.

The Environmental Management Bureau confirmed the incident on 24 October.

No comment from Universal Robina Corporation is available at this time.

Tourism and fishing industries are expected to be heavily impacted by the disaster.
