The Kunstmuseum Basel has concluded that Paul Gauguin's final self portrait is authentic, following an investigation sparked by a researcher's doubts earlier this year.
A specialist in Gauguin's work, Fabrice Fourmanoir, had alleged that the painting was a fake, created by Nguyen Van Cam, a Vietnamese friend of Gauguin's, in 1916, 13 years after Gauguin's death.
However, the museum's research found that while part of the face was retouched after the artist's death, the painting itself is genuine.
The painting was made by Paul Gauguin, but with some posthumous retouching.
The investigation was conducted by the Kunstmuseum Basel, which has ultimately confirmed the authenticity of the self portrait.
Author's summary: Gauguin's last self portrait is authentic.
