Local Government Reorganisation in Staffordshire
Three southern Staffordshire councils have proposed a plan to create three new unitary authorities.
The proposed authorities would cover the following areas:
- Lichfield, Tamworth, and East Staffordshire, with a population of over 322,000
- Cannock Chase, Stafford, and South Staffordshire, serving 360,000 residents
- Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire Moorlands, and Stoke-on-Trent, with nearly 495,000 residents
The plan is supported by 75% of the 16,700 local residents consulted, according to the councils behind the proposal.
Officials argue the reorganisation would deliver significant cost savings, potentially up to £22m, by reducing duplication, streamlining services, and simplifying governance.
