A new agrivoltaics system has been installed at a coffee farm in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, aiming to set standards for energy independence in hurricane-prone regions.
Miguel Berdiel, owner of Hacienda Berdiel Torres, faced multiple challenges, including high energy costs and damage from Hurricane Maria, which hindered the farm's growth despite optimal coffee-growing conditions and a hydroponic greenhouse.
The farm's hydroponics system was eventually shut down, and plans to offer jobs and locally grown food to the community were put on hold.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) InSPIRE initiative and Oregon-based nonprofit Twende Solar collaborated to plan and coordinate a solar installation, recognizing the farm's potential as an agrivoltaics research and climate resilience project.
The project could set standards for energy independence in hurricane-prone regions.
