Palestinian Authority Succession Plan
Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has designated Hussein al-Sheikh as his temporary successor.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a longtime Palestinian political figure and former prisoner in Israel, was appointed Deputy Chairman by Abu Mazen last year.
- Al-Sheikh will temporarily assume leadership of the PA in the absence of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
- His interim term will last up to 90 days.
- Direct elections must be held to select a new chairman within this timeframe, in accordance with Palestinian election law.
