EU Updates Age Verification Standards for Minors

The EU has updated its age verification standards for minors, with a focus on privacy-preserving methods.

India's proposed Digital Privacy Data Protection Act, 2023, requires websites and online services to verify the age of their users and meet additional obligations if a user is under 18, including obtaining verifiable parental consent and refraining from profiling minors for targeted advertising.

The proposal has drawn significant criticism for its potential privacy implications, as there might not be a perfect system in place that ensures the accuracy of the verification method, protects the privacy and security of users, and adheres to data minimisation principles.

The Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), the French-based data protection commission, has pointed out these concerns.

Author's summary: EU updates age verification standards.
