Natalie Gould of the Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre provides expert advice on caring for British hedgehogs, officially classed as vulnerable to extinction in 2020.
As we enter the most difficult time of year for hedgehogs, it's essential to support them. British summers are becoming increasingly challenging for wildlife, and hedgehogs are no exception.
Hedgehogs can have two litters per year: the first in June/July and the second from August to October. The late-born hoglets, known as autumn juveniles, often struggle to gain the necessary weight to survive winter and are commonly seen in rescue centres.
Many young hedgehogs that arrive at Vale Wildlife Hospital during autumn and winter will stay until spring, resulting in a high occupancy of 250-400 hedgehogs at any given time.
