First Non-Travel Case of Monkeypox Hits California
Monkeypox, also known as mpox, can spread easily between people in close contact or face-to-face, according to experts.
A resident of Long Beach has tested positive for the virus, which was first discovered in Denmark in the 1950s.
The virus can present with various symptoms, including rashes and fevers.
While typically non-fatal, some people are susceptible to severe infections, which can result in death. Accurate diagnosis is crucial, as other viruses like chickenpox and measles can mimic the appearance of monkeypox.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been monitoring the virus for decades.
