Millions of dollars are invested in South Dakota for pheasant hunting season, with last year's season seeing the most birds harvested in a decade.
According to the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department, this year's season has potential, depending on the brooding season in spring and early summer. Nick Harrington, spokesman for the department, stated that the pheasant season, which starts on October 31, is influenced by the brooding season.
“We had that mild winter, so we know there were a lot of birds left on the landscape. When you have those tough winters, that's when we aren't set up just as perfectly,”
said Harrington. Other small game, like prairie grouse, had their highest numbers in 25 years, and more birds were harvested in South Dakota over two weeks of October 2024 than in any other state's entire season. Numbers have been increasing since 2017, following a mild winter.
