WHO Global Report on Antimicrobial Resistance Sheds Light on Growing Threat | Managed Healthcare Executive

WHO Global Report on Antimicrobial Resistance

A new report by the WHO Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) examines global and regional resistance trends for 16 pathogen–antibiotic combinations.

The report is based on over 23 million bacteriologically confirmed infections reported by 104 countries between 2016 and 2023.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to global health, preventing life-saving treatments from working, and is a natural process where genetic changes in pathogens render certain antibiotics ineffective over time.

Overuse of antibiotics is a main driver of resistance, causing pathogens to adapt quicker than normal, with antibiotic resistance estimated to be directly responsible for significant health issues.
