Preserving PortMiami's Fuel Supply
County commissioners have taken steps to prevent an economic disaster by authorizing the use of eminent domain to acquire the sole fueling site at PortMiami, currently located on Fisher Island.
The 9.6-acre site has been the port's sole source of fuel for 95 years, but its future is uncertain due to a pending sale to luxury condo developer HRP.
The land was quickly sold to HRP after commissioners debated the use of eminent domain in September, which is expected to raise the cost of a county acquisition by millions.
