A tragic accident occurred on I-85 in Jackson County, Georgia, involving a semitrailer and a van, resulting in the loss of eight lives.

According to Deputy Jackson County Coroner Dean Stringer, an eighth body was found in the wreckage. The victims were members of a Gwinnett County family who died when the semitrailer struck their van, causing it to burst into flames.

The crash happened when the semitrailer, driven by 33-year-old Kane Hammock, was following too closely to the Dodge van on the interstate. Hammock has been charged with eight counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree vehicular feticide, following too closely, distracted driving, and operating a vehicle without a current plate.

No comment from the authorities or the family was available at the time of reporting.

The incident occurred about 62 miles northeast of Atlanta, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
