The Lasting Legacy of Coach Funk

The Lasting Legacy of Coach Funk

Now in her 52nd season at Marathon, Funk has no plans of leaving.

In 1972, Title IX was passed on a federal level, prohibiting discrimination based on gender in any education program or activity receiving federal funding.

This prompted schools to give girls a chance to play. In Marathon, implementing girls’ sports became a big project.

1967 alum Karen Funk then got a call that changed her life forever.

The superintendent called me and said, ‘We’re going to start girls’ sports in the league. Would you be interested in coaching field hockey?

Funk said. Because no one else knew anything about it, and I took one 10-week course in it, so I said yes because that’s what I wanted to be able to do.

Funk also coached volleyball, basketball, and softball in that year and eventually became a P.E. teacher at Marathon, where she retired in 2006.

But one thing Funk did not leave was the field hockey team, a sport she didn’t even play growing up.

Author summary: Coach Funk legacy remains strong after 52 years.
