On October 13, 2025, Dakota Middle School in Rochester held a special gathering to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day.
People from across the state attended the event, which featured performances and discussions on the cultural and historical significance of traditional outfits and dances.
People think of us as historical figures, as mascots, or Halloween costumes and we’re none of those things. We’re still living breathing human beings, and we have all the same feelings that everyone else does and we want to be recognized for who we are, and that we’ve been here since time immemorial.
Leo Gunner Baker from the Upper Sioux Community near Granite Falls, MN, emphasized the importance of recognizing the living culture and history of indigenous peoples.
