Malaysian Government to Implement Lemon Law
The government of Malaysia is set to amend the Consumer Protection Act 1999 to incorporate elements of a lemon law, as announced by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2026.
This move follows a six-month feasibility study conducted last year, which concluded that a specific legal framework is needed to address issues and limitations related to consumer protection in the automotive industry.
The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) welcomes this move, but emphasizes that a clear definition and criteria are needed for the implementation of the lemon law to effectively protect the rights of consumers with regard to automotive purchases.
