Presenter Jonathan Uptin is among several employees departing the Nine Entertainment network as part of a widespread redundancy plan reported by The Courier-Mail. The cuts affect multiple divisions across Australia.
Uptin, who has held several positions at Nine — including anchoring the former Darwin News from Brisbane — is reportedly one of many staff members leaving the company. Joining him in departure from the Mt Coot-tha offices are producer Leon Cull and executive assistant Jessica Llewelyn, who was instructed over the weekend not to attend work on Monday.
“Mumbrella and other industry publications have reported that 50 roles across Nine’s streaming and broadcasting division will be impacted, however the number of cuts may be fewer, due to possible redeployment across the business.”
“The changes are part of a new operating model that formally brings together teams across Stan, Channel 9 and 9Now. It is designed to reduce duplication, drive greater collaboration and deliver commercial growth for Nine, while working to offset the challenging external advertising market.”
The statement reportedly made no mention of Nine Radio, prompting speculation that its stations — including 4BC, 2GB, and 3AW — might separate from the Nine group in the near future, as the company is said to be reviewing offers for that network.
Media outlets have highlighted the industry-wide pressures driving these decisions, linking them to broader challenges in the advertising market and the shift toward integrated digital operations.
