Film and TV Review: Star Wars: Visions Volume 3

The third volume of Star Wars: Visions once again brings a collection of diverse and imaginative shorts that appeal to a wide range of fans. Even those who aren’t devoted anime watchers can find something special within its nine episodes, much like in the two previous volumes.

Each story offers a unique artistic approach and perspective on the Star Wars universe. Some episodes resonate more than others, but even the weaker entries hold moments of creativity worth appreciating.

The Duel: Payback (23m)

Created by Kamikaze Douga and ANIMA, The Duel: Payback stands out with its distinctive visual style, though it can occasionally be difficult to follow visually. The narrative explores deeper questions of what it means to be a Jedi, challenging traditional boundaries of good and evil.

The Ronin, a former Sith who now hunts other Sith, and Aneé-san, another ex-Sith turned bodyguard, embody more Jedi-like qualities than the Jedi Grand Master sent to destroy them.

This storyline inverts the established Star Wars dynamic—where Sith usually hunt Jedi—by presenting a Jedi Grand Master that appears more machine than man. The muted gray palette of the animation juxtaposes sharply with the vivid red and blue of the lightsabers, enhancing the moral ambiguity of the tale.

While “Gray Jedi” aren’t officially part of Star Wars canon, the episode embraces the concept with skill and depth. Longtime fans will also appreciate recognizable sonic details, from Ewok chatter to the iconic horn calls of Return of the Jedi.

Author’s Summary

This review highlights how Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 expands creative boundaries through stunning animation, moral nuance, and cinematic Easter eggs that enrich both casual and devoted fans’ experiences.
