Grimes reaches 1,000 points as Tech women cruise to win over Cumberlands

Grimes Reaches 1,000 Points as Tech Women Defeat Cumberlands

Reghan Grimes needed just five points to open the season and join the 1,000-point club. The Tennessee Tech senior far surpassed that mark, scoring 24 points to top all scorers and lead the Golden Eagles to a 92–67 victory over the University of the Cumberlands at the Eblen Center.

Grimes shot 7-for-13 from the field and 10-for-11 at the free-throw line, pacing the Golden Eagles to a strong start at 1-0. Chloe Larry contributed 17 points, while Tulsa transfer Cam Mathews added a career-best 13 points, both sinking three shots from beyond the arc. Reagan Hurst notched 10 points in her first regular-season game since returning from an injury that sidelined her last year.

“It felt amazing to be back on the court and help the team kick off the season right,” said Hurst.

The Golden Eagles delivered an efficient shooting performance, hitting nearly 50 percent of their field goals (30-for-61). They also shot 10-for-22 from three-point range and 22-for-33 from the foul line. However, foul trouble posed challenges, as Tech was called for 33 fouls overall, putting seven players at risk of fouling out.

The visiting Patriots attempted 50 free throws, converting 32 for 64 percent. Joy Kendrick led Cumberlands (3-0) with 21 points, including 12-for-15 success at the stripe, despite a 4-for-15 showing from the field.
