Canada Post has initiated layoffs as part of its restructuring efforts while continuing mediation talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).
On October 30, 2025, CUPW negotiators representing both postal bargaining units met with Canada Post and federal mediators for the first time since October 3. The union aimed to revive negotiations and seek a path forward.
Further discussions between the parties are expected in the coming days, according to a CUPW news release.
Meanwhile, CUPW members maintain rotating strikes. In Quebec, members have intensified their actions by refusing to process or deliver unaddressed flyers (Neighbourhood Mail).
“We all have a part to play in our fight for public services, good jobs and a sustainable public post office. The negotiators thank all members for their continued support.”
Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works, and Procurement, responsible for Canada Post, indicated readiness to approve significant job cuts at the Crown Corporation.
Experts estimate that up to 10,000 jobs could be lost in this restructuring.
This week, Minister Lightbound provided testimony before the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates.
Canada Post's layoffs mark a critical stage in its restructuring as union talks continue, highlighting tensions between job security and modernization efforts at the Crown Corporation.
