Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7.
Before the album's release, Jay Som shared the single "Past Lives," featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore. The collaboration came together in Nashville, where they worked on the song with Steph Marziano.
Williams’ soft harmonies on the sweeping "Past Lives" deepen its melancholic mood, evoking feelings of drifting through low moments and brief bursts of energy that quickly fade away.
The track is powerful, with a slowed-down middle section that feels like an internal struggle.
"It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of 'Float,' I still can’t believe it happened," Duterte reflects on the collaboration. "She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her."
The Belong album features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. This is also the first Jay Som album to include guest vocalists.
