Slovenia: Parliament Debates Extension of Motorway Vignette Validity
The Slovenian Parliament is set to hold an extraordinary session to discuss an emergency measure proposing a four-month extension to the validity of annual electronic motorways vignettes. This initiative aims to address the impact of reduced traffic caused by ongoing extensive motorway investments.
Government Proposal and Parliamentary Response
The government introduced this proposal as a fair gesture towards daily motorway users amid significant infrastructure development. Minister Arcon stated:
“By doing so, we are demonstrating a fair attitude towards all those who use the motorways every day. We are aware that the investments are truly record-breaking and that patience is required, but at the same time, we are accommodating all those who use these motorways.”
Last Tuesday, the Parliamentary Infrastructure Committee approved the government’s project with little debate. Coalition members supported the measure, while the opposition criticized it as an electoral strategy ahead of the spring elections.
Temporary Abolition of Vignette on Skofije-Koper Road
In addition, the government decided to suspend the vignette requirement on the Škofije-Koper road starting January 1st, offering another relief to road users.
