Jesper Bratt scored on a breakaway 1:33 into overtime, securing a 4-3 victory for the New Jersey Devils over the Montreal Canadiens at Prudential Center on Thursday. Bratt contributed both a goal and an assist, while Jack Hughes also added two assists.
The Devils improved their home record to 6-0-0 this season and became the first team to reach 10 wins overall (10-4-0). Goalie Jacob Markstrom made 16 saves during the game.
"I just tried to read the goalie's movement and felt like I came in with a lot of speed," Bratt said. "I felt pretty comfortable in that situation to try to make him believe I'd do one thing, and just try to read what the goalie was doing."
Forward Timo Meier praised the team's progress:
"It's nice to get 10 wins, but we want to keep building our game. We know what we're trying to accomplish on a daily basis to get better and push each other. This game was a good game to learn from."
Noah Dobson recorded two assists for Montreal, and rookie goalie Jakub Dobes made 24 saves. The Canadiens had won their first five overtime games this season.
Dobes entered the game with a 1.97 goals-against average and .930 save percentage over his first six starts. After the loss, the 24-year-old goalie became emotional in the postgame interview, taking responsibility for the defeat.
