Jonathan Bailey was absent from NBC's special event Wicked: One Wonderful Night due to scheduling conflicts. His role was temporarily filled by Bowen Yang, who performed the number "Dancing Through Life" during the broadcast.
The televised celebration, which aired on Thursday, November 6, featured Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as the main performers. They sang selections from Wicked and previewed songs from the upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good. Both actors shared insights about working on the movie and hinted at new twists in its continuation.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film adapts the acclaimed Broadway musical and retells the origin stories of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Erivo), and Glinda the Good Witch of the North (portrayed by Grande), long before Dorothy follows the yellow brick road.
In the first Wicked movie, Elphaba and Glinda both have affections for Shiz University student Fiyero, portrayed by Bailey. The ensemble also includes Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, and Bowen Yang, most of whom appeared live during the special.
“They were trying to move mountains to make it happen,” said choreographer Christopher Scott in an interview with Variety.
Jonathan Bailey missed NBC's Wicked: One Wonderful Night due to scheduling conflicts, while Bowen Yang took his place as Fiyero in the star-studded celebration.
