During the second T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, India struggled to defend a modest total of 125 despite Jasprit Bumrah’s efforts with the ball. Former India batter Robin Uthappa analyzed Bumrah’s bowling, suggesting that the fast bowler tends to lose accuracy when pushing too hard for wickets.
“When we were bowling after scoring 125, the start was very important. If we had picked up two or three wickets in the first three or four overs, the game could have been closer because we have quality spinners in the middle overs. I felt we were probably trying too hard to pick up wickets. So we got a little wayward,” Uthappa said on Star Sports.
Despite Bumrah’s figures of two wickets for 26 runs in four overs, Uthappa felt his rhythm was slightly off. He explained that when Bumrah remains calm and focused on maintaining consistent line and length, he usually finds success. But when desperate for breakthroughs, his bowling can lose discipline.
“I have observed that whenever Bumrah gets desperate to pick up wickets, he becomes slightly wayward, and when he is disciplined and hits a good line and length, he mostly picks up wickets. Australia took full advantage of that waywardness at the start, the way we started with the ball in the second innings,” Uthappa added.
The 2007 World Cup winner also criticized India’s poor batting show, crediting only the half-century from Abhishek Sharma and a brief cameo from Harshit Rana for adding some respectability to the team’s total.
Robin Uthappa highlighted Jasprit Bumrah’s inconsistency under pressure, noting that India’s defeat at the MCG stemmed from both erratic bowling and a weak batting effort.
