No. 3 Virginia field hockey needed a win to return to form after a loss to No. 2 North Carolina last week. A home game against No. 7 Liberty provided the perfect opportunity.
The game was a defensive slugfest, with Liberty ranking second in shutouts per game and Virginia ranking third in save percentage. Virginia took home the 1-0 win, stifling Liberty’s attempt at an equalizer in the second half.
The Cavaliers started strong, notching two shots to the Flames’ zero. The lone goal came eight minutes in off a deflected shot from graduate midfielder Suze Leemans.
