The West Coast Eagles' 2025 AFLW season concluded with a 41-point defeat to Carlton at IKON Park on Saturday. Battling wild and wet Melbourne conditions, Carlton dominated the scoreboard on their home ground, winning 9.6 (60) to 2.7 (19).
Despite the loss, several young Eagles stood out in the club’s biggest game to date. Ella Roberts was outstanding, leading with 30 touches and 12 tackles, and scoring the team’s first finals goal. First-year players Charlotte Riggs and Kayla Dalgleish contributed well in the challenging weather, while defenders Charlie Thomas and Jess Rentsch played vital roles in defense.
Dana Hooker, the inaugural AFLW player for the Eagles, played her final game after announcing her retirement during Round 12, ending an impressive 10-year career.
Carlton started strongly, holding the Eagles scoreless in the first quarter. Roberts finally put West Coast on the board in the second quarter, but the Blues’ young stars elevated their play in the third, scoring three goals. Sophie McKay added two goals and eight disposals during that period.
The Irish players for Carlton, Erone Fitzpatrick and Dayna Finn, adapted perfectly to the cold and wet conditions, driving the Blues forward with effective run and carry into attack.
Author's summary: The Eagles demonstrated promising talent in their first finals appearance, but Carlton’s experience and composure in harsh conditions proved decisive to end the Eagles’ 2025 AFLW campaign.
