The Pittsburgh Steelers’ dominant defensive performance against the Indianapolis Colts clearly made Dick LeBeau proud. The game also marked the first meeting between T.J. Watt and LeBeau, who returned to Pittsburgh for the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Super Bowl XL winning team.
Despite their shared connection, it took nine years for them to meet in person. Watt reflected on the moment in an interview with WMBS’ George Von Benko:
“It took nine years, but I’m glad. I mean, obviously he’s a busy guy, but to be able to meet the legend himself was very surreal.”
LeBeau was one of several Steelers honored during Week 10’s game, celebrated on the field at halftime. Other notable alumni included quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Jerome Bettis, and defensive lineman Aaron Smith.
LeBeau and Watt missed each other during their playing and coaching careers, as LeBeau’s final year with the Steelers was 2014, while Watt entered the NFL in 2017. In 2014, LeBeau was Tennessee’s defensive coordinator when the Titans played Pittsburgh. Watt had two tackles in a 40-17 win but they did not meet afterward.
“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome. And to be able to be recognized for their Super Bowl is awesome. To just see all those guys back in town and see how tight-knit they are.”
Author's summary: T.J. Watt finally met Steelers legend Dick LeBeau after nine years, highlighting the enduring respect and camaraderie among Pittsburgh’s football greats.
