Olympic gold medallist Ariarne Titmus recently opened up about an unexpected aspect of her retirement from competitive swimming. Despite the widespread attention following her announcement, she admitted that no one had asked her the question she found most important.
“I knew it would be a shock to a lot of people. It was quite out of the blue,” said Titmus during her interview on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About.
The four-time Olympic champion said she expected surprise but not the immense reaction that followed. The announcement came early in the morning, and within minutes, social media was flooded with posts and articles about her decision.
“But I certainly wasn’t expecting the reception I received,” she continued. “The morning I hit post at 8am Brisbane time, within half an hour, all over social media there were already articles and clips.”
Even with all the attention, Titmus shared that she had not been asked why she decided to step away from swimming at only 25 years old. She explained that while she worried the public might not understand her choice, she personally felt at peace with it.
“I am at the top of my game, I’m still only 25, and I was concerned that the wider public wouldn’t understand my reasoning. But I haven’t had one person asking me why.”
Titmus added that she feels content with all she achieved in swimming and is looking forward to exploring new directions in her life. One major turning point came as she served in the commentary box during the World Championships in July, where she realized it was time to move on from competition.
Ariarne Titmus reflected on her surprising retirement, noting that while the public responded intensely, few asked why she chose to end her career at her peak.
