Paul Kelly marks a significant year with the release of his album Seventy. Out today, the record offers both a reflection on a deeply lived life and continues Kelly’s fearless exploration of humanity.
This standout track serves as a sequel to Kelly’s 1996 classic How to Make Gravy, telling the story from Rita’s perspective.
“I’ve been mulling over the idea of a sequel to ‘How to Make Gravy’ from Rita’s point of view for quite some time. About five years ago I wrote down the words, ‘Rita wrote a letter,’ and thought, ‘There’s my title.’”
The lyrics showcase Kelly’s signature blend of wit and emotional depth:
“Rita wrote a letter / One you don’t want to get from your wife / When Rita writes a letter / The pen is sharper than the knife.”
The album’s other new single is accompanied by a tender music video directed by Kelly’s daughter, Maddy. The clip features his two-year-old granddaughter Ada Mae and offers a touching reflection on love and family legacy.
“In the end, love is all of us that remains,” Kelly reflects. “It’s a joy working with my daughter and granddaughter. Three generations in one little song.”
The album Seventy encapsulates Paul Kelly’s introspective and heartfelt artistry, weaving stories and family ties into a compelling musical milestone.
