Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly has unveiled his latest album, Seventy, marking an important milestone in his career. The release offers both a reflection on his life’s journey and an ongoing pursuit of what it means to be human.
One of the album’s highlights is the single “Rita Wrote a Letter,” which continues the narrative of Kelly’s 1996 song “How to Make Gravy.” This time, the story unfolds from Rita’s perspective, revealing new emotional depth and clarity.
“I’ve been mulling over the idea of a sequel to ‘How to Make Gravy’ from Rita’s point of view for quite some time,” Kelly said. “About five years ago I wrote down the words, ‘Rita wrote a letter,’ and thought, ‘There’s my title.’”
The track showcases Kelly’s trademark mix of wit and poignancy, as he explores the pain and nuance that come with relationships and redemption.
The album also includes the tender single “Happy Birthday Ada Mae,” accompanied by a newly released music video directed by Kelly’s daughter, Maddy Kelly. The video stars his two-year-old granddaughter, Ada Mae, capturing a heartfelt meditation on love, time, and family.
“In the end, love is all of us that remains,” Kelly reflects. “It’s a joy working with my daughter and granddaughter.”
This intimate collaboration highlights Kelly’s deep connection to his family and his enduring creativity in expressing universal truths through personal experience.
Paul Kelly’s Seventy intertwines reflection, storytelling, and family legacy, reaffirming his place as one of Australia’s most insightful and soulful songwriters.
