Anthony Stolarz had a challenging outing on Saturday for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was pulled from the game after conceding four goals on 19 shots over a period and a half versus the Boston Bruins, in a contest that ended 5-3 in favor of Boston. This marked the first time Stolarz was replaced for reasons other than injury during his time with the Maple Leafs.
“It’s obviously not up to par,” Stolarz said after the game. “I mean, it seems like every night I’m giving up one or two you want back but, for me, it’s life of a goalie. Have to put it behind you & focus on the next game.”
He was particularly hard on himself regarding his start to the match.
“First & foremost I gotta bear down & make a save,” Stolarz said. “Giving up the first two shots not a good way to start the game.”
Dennis Hildeby made his season debut for the Maple Leafs, stepping in as relief. He faced 20 shots in 32 minutes and 30 seconds of play, allowing just one goal.
“He was awesome,” Stolarz praised Hildeby. “I put him in a s--t situation. He handled it like a true pro.”
Stolarz has struggled to return to the high level he showed in his rookie season with the Leafs. During the 2024-25 season, he posted a 2.14 goals-against average and a league-leading .926 save percentage over a career-high 34 games.
Author’s Summary: Stolarz’s rough game led to an unusual early pull, highlighting the gap between his past excellence and current struggles, while backup goalie Hildeby made a strong impression.
