During the third quarter of Saturday night's game against No. 4 Alabama, LSU made a quarterback change by replacing senior Garrett Nussmeier with sophomore Michael Van Buren. LSU was trailing 17-6 with 6:26 left in the third quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium when Van Buren entered the game.
This was the first time Van Buren played this season in a closely contested game. Prior to the change, Nussmeier had taken every offensive snap against Alabama, completing 18 of 21 passes for 121 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Nussmeier led LSU into the red zone on the opening drive of the second half, but the Tigers committed a delay of game penalty on third-and-goal from the 8-yard line and called a timeout before the next play. On third-and-13, Nussmeier was pressured and sacked, marking Alabama's first sack of the game.
LSU interim coach Frank Wilson suggested Van Buren might play in specific situations against the Crimson Tide.
It remains uncertain whether Nussmeier will return to the game.
