Garrett Nussmeier heads to bench as LSU makes quarterback change against Alabama

LSU Makes Quarterback Change Against Alabama

During the game against No. 4 Alabama on Saturday night, LSU replaced senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier with sophomore Michael Van Buren in the third quarter. The change happened with LSU trailing 17-6 and 6:26 remaining in the third quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Garrett Nussmeier’s Performance

Nussmeier had been the starter for LSU, playing every offensive snap until the substitution. He completed 18 of 21 passes for 121 yards, without any touchdowns or interceptions. Early in the second half, he led LSU into the red zone on the opening drive, but the team faced a delay of game penalty on third and goal at the 8-yard line and then called a timeout.

Michael Van Buren’s Role

Van Buren entered during a critical part of the game, marking his first meaningful playing time this season when the game was still competitive. LSU interim coach Frank Wilson had indicated earlier that Van Buren might see action in specific situations against Alabama.
