‘Eternity’ Star Elizabeth Olsen on Death and the Afterlife: ‘I Always Imagined I Would Die Alone’

‘Eternity’ Star Elizabeth Olsen on Death and the Afterlife

At the premiere of “Eternity,” A24’s romantic dramedy starring Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, the subject of death was a central theme. Olsen portrays a woman who has died and must choose where to spend eternity—either with her first husband, who died in the Korean War, or her second, whom she was married to for more than 60 years.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Reflections on Death

Olsen shared that she has long imagined what her own departure from life would be like.

“I’ve had this kind of plotted out from a very young age,” she said. “When I was in high school, I dreamt of being a very old lady on the coast of England, alone actually. I might have had an animal, and it would be like foggy and wet and kind of cold, and I would go on long walks and I would be in a small town that had like one of each thing you need like one bakery, one coffee shop, one fishmonger, one cheese shop, one like community center, one theater. It was always just me because I like meeting new people and I like being a part of a community, and I always imagined I would die alone.”

She added with a laugh, “I don’t know what to do with that, but that was part of my dream.”

Miles Teller’s View on Afterlife

Miles Teller expressed hope about reuniting with loved ones after death. He also wishes for simplicity in the afterlife.

“I hope I’m reunited with late friends and family members I never got to meet,” Teller said. “I want to keep things simple.”

Summary

Elizabeth Olsen reflects on her early imaginings of dying alone in a quiet town, while Miles Teller hopes for reunion and simplicity beyond life in their film “Eternity.”
