Emma Little-Pengelly will not attend Catherine Connolly's inauguration

Northern Ireland’s deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly, confirmed she will not attend the inauguration of Ireland’s next president, Catherine Connolly, citing existing commitments related to Remembrance Day.

Although she received an invitation to the ceremony at Dublin Castle, Little-Pengelly explained that her schedule on that day is already occupied with official duties in Belfast and Windsor.

"I have received an invitation for the inauguration events for the Irish president on Tuesday but it will not be possible for me to accept due to a number of other commitments in Belfast and Windsor."

She noted that Tuesday coincides with Remembrance Day, which holds deep significance for many. She plans to attend a service and take part in an Act of Remembrance at Parliament Buildings before travelling to Windsor Castle for a reception hosted by Their Majesties the King and Queen.

"Tuesday marks Remembrance Day, an important day for so many... I am scheduled to attend a service and an Act of Remembrance in Parliament Buildings before travelling to Windsor Castle at the invitation of Their Majesties for a special reception to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day."

Little-Pengelly extended her best wishes to Catherine Connolly as she assumes the presidency of Ireland, acknowledging the personal importance of the occasion.

"I wish Catherine Connolly well as she takes up office, recognising this as a significant personal honour for her, and I hope to speak with her personally in the next number of days."

Meanwhile, First Minister Michelle O’Neill is expected to represent Northern Ireland at the inauguration ceremony in Dublin Castle.
