Ita, 83, is maintaining a positive attitude despite facing uncertainty after back surgery in 2021. Soon after the operation, she developed symptoms that led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder.
Since the surgery, Ita has not been able to walk properly and now relies on a wheelchair. She shared with The Senior:
“I haven't walked properly since the back surgery.”
Doctors remain unsure whether her condition was caused by the surgery or if it will worsen over time. Ita explained the impact this has on her daily life:
“I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments.”
Despite the challenges, she chooses to concentrate on the good aspects, such as freedom from back pain:
“I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have.”
Ita admits frustration about the limited funding available for research into her illness. She described her outlook on life:
“Life is full of detours.”
Beyond her health struggles, Ita has completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first written without the pressures of full-time work. She said:
“It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do.”
Author's summary: Ita embraces life’s challenges with resilience and positivity, valuing creativity and control despite facing a difficult medical diagnosis and physical limitations.
