As reports point to looming sellout agreement between Canada Post and CUPW, what way forward for postal workers?

Prime Minister Mark Carney has openly stated that his Liberal government views the dismantling of Canada Post in its current form as a trial run for broader attacks planned against the working class.

Union negotiations and government involvement

Recent media reports suggest that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is nearing an agreement with Canada Post that could impose major cuts to jobs and working conditions. On Monday, November 3, a new bargaining round began.

CUPW praised the help of a government-appointed mediator and declared the union’s intent to “overcome the disagreements between the parties” and “secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”

In another statement, the union appealed to the Liberal government—which has already expressed support for plans to eliminate roughly two-thirds of Canada Post’s 55,000 workers—

“to ensure that any decisions… are made… with Union input.”
