Stockport train station was evacuated this evening after a "suspicious" suitcase was discovered on a footbridge above the railway. Bomb disposal teams were called to the scene, causing significant disruption.
Delays lasting up to 90 minutes and some cancellations continue on Northern rail services at Stockport. Issues are affecting the wider rail network and are expected to persist into the night. Travelers are advised to check their journeys before traveling.
Greater Manchester Police have announced that the cordons are being lifted as the suitcase was found to be empty after examination by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
"Along with the EOD and other emergency services, we have been dealing with an incident on Greek Street in Stockport this evening after reports of a 'suspicious' item on a bridge. Fortunately, the 'device' has been examined and found to be an empty suitcase, and the cordons are being lifted. Thanks for everyone's patience."
Liam Smith, present at Stockport Interchange, described the scene during the evacuation:
"I was told I had to evacuate Stockport bus interchange and it was chaos with people running. I was told I had to leave immediately. There were approximately 50 of us running out of the interchange, followed by the police. There was lots of panic and hurry."
Police, fire crews, and paramedics were all on Greek Street responding to reports of the suspicious item.
Summary: A suspicious suitcase at Stockport station triggered a large-scale evacuation and disrupted train services, but was later confirmed to be harmless.
