After over three years of development, the nonprofit Lotus House marked the opening of the Children’s Village, a new education and resource center for children in Overtown. Inspired by the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child,” the center collaborates with more than a dozen nonprofit organizations. It features a behavioral therapy center, a community health center, and two private schools, among other initiatives.
The Children’s Village aims to support approximately 2,500 children and families each year. This expansion builds upon Lotus House’s existing efforts at their nearby facility, which has been operating since 2018. The nonprofit focuses on helping women and children recover from violence and prevent homelessness.
“We know after many years that investing in children is the way in which we can break cycles of poverty and abuse and violence and homelessness,” said Constance Collins, founder of Lotus House Women’s Shelter.
The ribbon-cutting event included remarks from notable figures such as state Senator Ileana Garcia, singer and advocate Gloria Estefan, and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who serves as a member of the Lotus House Board.
Children’s Village builds on Lotus House’s commitment to breaking poverty and violence cycles by offering comprehensive support to thousands of local children and families annually.
