A massive four-alarm fire broke out at a warehouse in Remington, North Baltimore, on Friday and has since been contained, according to SKY 11. The blaze prompted firefighters to evacuate the building and nearby homes amid heavy flames and thick smoke.
Baltimore City firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a commercial building on 23rd Street, located east of the Jones Falls Expressway. Fire, emergency, and police officials are all present at the scene.
Fire crews conducted defensive operations while evacuating the warehouse and adjacent residences to ensure safety. By 2 p.m., a total of four alarms had been called to manage the situation.
"Firefighters from BCFD 100% saved the houses," said Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace.
"Firefighters put themselves between the warehouse and the homes. These men and women absolutely risked their lives, got between this warehouse and those houses in an area I estimate to be about 50 feet. They were working around energized BGE lines, they were working through a very, very high volume of fire – zero visibility up 23rd Street."
Chief Wallace reported that the initial fire call came in around 1:18 p.m. The fire is believed to have started outside the building and was spread rapidly by wind.
The fire is now under control with no reported damage to nearby homes thanks to the courageous efforts of the firefighting teams.
